Peter Nugent (1938-2001)
The members of the R-LC News team were as shocked and saddened as
everyone else in our area to learn of the untimely death of our popular local member. Readers may have been surprised to find no mention of Peter's death in last month's issue. The explanation is that the May News went to press the day before Peter passed away.
Everybody has had good things to say about Peter; the expressions "caring", "honest", "did his best", "a good bloke" have been much heard from the Prime Minister down to the ordinary citizens in our district. There have been very few people in Aston who have not been helped by Peter either directly with a personal problem or indirectly when Peter assisted an organisation to which they or their children belonged. He was much appreciated for his energy and devotion to these bread and butter issues. But especially, he was much admired for his principled stance on the bigger issues such as reconciliation and mandatory sentencing.
Peter's funeral service was a very moving celebration of his life and work. The tributes made by his daughter Deirdre Morella, John Howard, his close friend Sam Seabury, a former member of his office staff Damien Farrell and fellow parliamentarian Petro Georgiou were full of warmth and emotion.
On behalf of all connected with our paper I say thank you Peter for what you did for the people of Rowville-Lysterfield. To Carol and all members of the family our sincere condolences.
