OBITUARY: BENU PRAHAD ADHIKARI
Bergins Road resident, Benu Adhikari, died as the result of knife wounds when he was attacked in his taxi on the night of the 11th March. A 19 year old Brunswick man has been charged with Mr Adhikari's murder.
Benu's tragic death has been a terrible loss for his small family who are striving to make a new life for themselves in their adopted country.
Benu was an accountant in the town of Biratnager in Nepal and came to Melbourne in 1994 to undertake a computing course. While studying here Benu supported himself by becoming a part-time driver with Silver Top Taxis and was able to save enough to pay for his wife Munu to join him in Australia in 1995. The following year he was able to bring out his two sons, Bikram and Ujwal, and, in 2001, his mother Krishna Kumari.
The family first lived in Footscray where the boys attended Footscray Primary School. They later moved to Brunswick, Elwood and then to Rowville in 2001. Bikram is now doing a nursing course at Box Hill TAFE while Ujwal is in Year 12 at Rowville Secondary College.
Benu and Munu ran a Nepalese restaurant in Bridge Road, Richmond for more than two years before Benu started his own home loans brokerage business. He continued to supplement his income by driving a taxi on Friday and Saturday nights and it was during one of these shifts that he lost his life.
Benu was a hard worker and was determined to make a good life for himself and his boys by taking advantage of the good educational opportunities available in Melbourne. As an only son he was very devoted to his mother. He never knew his father who had passed away before he was born. However, he himself was a kind and loving father whom his sons will always remember with great affection.
