Marlene Hobbs was a descendant of an old Rowville pioneer family, the Bergins. It was her great uncle, Nick Bergin, who gave Rowville its name in 1905.
Marlene grew up on the family farm on the north east corner of Stud and Wellington Roads, across the road from Nick's blacksmith shop and post office. Marlene was the last in the line of Bergin family members to serve the district as the Rowville Post Mistress (in 1965).
In 1961 she married Keith Hobbs whose father Gordon had been the Lysterfield Post Master.
Keith and Marlene settled in Doveton where Marlene became strongly involved in community affairs. Her service through the Salvation Army Friendship Club, Friends of Doveton Library, Hallam Red Cross, Doveton Neighbourhood Place, Doveton Community Bus Committee and Bellview Elderly Citizens' Club over four decades saw her twice named Citizen of the Year for the City of Casey and in 2001 honoured with the Order of Australia.
Marlene died suddenly on 5 November. Her funeral service conducted at St James, Dandenong was packed with friends and admirers of this good woman who had given so much of her life for others. Chief among the mourners were her husband Keith, children lan and Wendv and her four grandchildren.
